🇬🇧 United Kingdom — university admissions for families from abroad

Entry year 2027 · Last reviewed · ✅ official 🟡 secondary ⚠️ to verify

1. At a glance

  • One application for (almost) everything: undergraduate applications go through UCAS, one online form, up to 5 choices, one personal statement for all of them. ✅ [S1]
  • Apply early: for 2027 entry the main deadline is 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science closed on 15 October 2026. ✅ [S2] 🟡 [S3]
  • You pick the subject up front. Most degrees are 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 4 years in Scotland, and students study one subject (or two) from day one.
  • Offers are usually conditional on final school results (e.g. "AAA at A level" or its equivalent in the IB, bac, Abitur or APs). 🟡 [S9][S10]
  • Fee status is the big money question. Since 2021, most EU citizens pay international fees (roughly £17k–£35k a year, medicine £45k–£55k+), not the UK "home" fee (£9,790 in England for 2026/27). 🟡 [S5][S7][S8]
  • Most non-UK, non-Irish students need a Student visa (£558 plus a health surcharge of £776 per year). ✅ [S4][S21]

2. The system

  • Universities are mostly public, but charge fees and run their own admissions. There is no national entrance exam; each university sets offers per course.
  • Degree length: a bachelor's degree is usually 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 4 years in Scotland. "Integrated master's" degrees (MEng, MSci, MPharm…) take 4 years (5 in Scotland). Medicine takes 5–6 years.
  • Subject chosen at application. Changing subject later is possible but not guaranteed. This is the biggest difference from the US liberal-arts model: a 17-year-old applies for "Economics" or "Mechanical Engineering", not for a university in general.
  • Four nations, different fee rules. Higher education is devolved: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each set fees and support for their own students. For students from abroad the main difference is Scotland's 4-year degree (and so one more year of fees and living costs).
  • Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge): you can apply to only one of the two in the same year, with the 15 October deadline, admissions tests and interviews. 🟡 [S3][S11]

3. How to apply

  • Platform: UCAS Hub (ucas.com). A school or adviser usually manages it ("applying through a centre"), but students abroad can also apply on their own. ✅ [S1]
  • Choices: up to 5 courses (conservatoires: up to 6 through UCAS Conservatoires). Medicine, dentistry and veterinary applicants can use at most 4 of the 5 for those subjects. ✅ [S1] 🟡 [S3]
  • Application fee (2027 entry): £34.50 flat, whatever the number of choices (2026 entry was £28.95). Clearing costs nothing extra. ✅ [S1]
  • Personal statement (new format since 2026 entry): three questions, one form for all 5 choices, 4,000 characters in total including spaces, at least 350 characters per answer. The three questions: 🟡 [S12]
    1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
    2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
    3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
  • Reference: one academic reference, written by a teacher or counsellor, and predicted grades. UK offers rely heavily on predicted grades, which many foreign schools don't issue by default. Ask the school early.
  • Admissions tests (booked separately, not through UCAS): 🟡 [S11]
    • UCAT for most medicine and dentistry courses: the summer test window, which for 2027

    entry ended in September 2026.

    • UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TMUA, TARA) for Cambridge, Imperial and others in engineering, science,

maths and economics: the October sitting (booking closed late September 2026).

    • Oxford's own tests for most Oxford courses: booked separately, sat in October.
    • LNAT for law at several universities (Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, KCL, LSE, Durham…).

⚠️ Deadlines differ by university. Check the LNAT site for each one.

  • Interviews: standard at Oxbridge and for medicine (often in "MMI" format, multiple mini interviews), rare elsewhere.

Early Jul 2027IB results (around 5 July)⚠️
Mid-Aug 2027A-level results day; confirmation of conditional offers⚠️
Sep–Oct 2027Courses start

Note for foreign applicants: "conditional" offers depend on results that arrive in the summer (IB early July, French bac early July, Abitur June–July, US APs early July). Send results to the universities as soon as they arrive. The UK doesn't receive foreign results automatically the way it receives A-level results.

5. Entry requirements for foreign qualifications

Offers are written in A-level grades (A*, A, B…) or in your qualification directly. Each university publishes its own country equivalence table, which is the document to find for each target university. The examples below show typical "AAA" offers, which top-20 universities commonly ask for (Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE and UCL often ask for A*AA–A*A*A).

QualificationExample "AAA" equivalentSource
IB DiplomaVaries widely by university; Oxford asks for 38–40 points including core, with 6s and 7s at Higher Level🟡 [S10]
French baccalauréat généralManchester: 15/20 overall, with 13 in maths and English. Liverpool: 14/20, with 14 in named subjects.🟡 [S10]
OIB / Bac français internationalManchester: 14/20 overall, with 13 in maths and English🟡 [S10]
German AbiturGlasgow, Leeds, Queen Mary: 1.6 overall, with subject minimums. Manchester: 1.5, with 12 in maths and 13 in English.🟡 [S10]
US high-school diplomaNot enough on its own. Typical: 3 AP exams at grade 5 (Queen's Belfast: 5,5,5 = AAA, 5,5,4 = AAB). Some accept 4 APs at 5,5,4,4 (Durham) or 5,5,5,4 with GPA 3.3+ (Queen Mary). Edinburgh may also ask for an SAT of about 1290 or an ACT of 27+.🟡 [S9]

Traps:

  • Subject requirements matter as much as the overall grade: maths or physics at a high level for engineering, chemistry for medicine, and so on.
  • US students: APs or other college-level work are usually required; a GPA alone rarely is enough.
  • French bac: the spécialités chosen in Première and Terminale count as the "subjects".

6. Language requirements

  • For the degree: universities set their own English requirement. IELTS Academic overall scores of 6.0–7.5 are typical, and other tests (TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1/C2, PTE) are widely accepted. Many universities waive it for nationals of majority-English-speaking countries (the US, Ireland…) and for some school-leaving qualifications (e.g. English at a set grade in the IB, OIB or Abitur). ⚠️ Check each university.
  • For the visa: the Student visa requires English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study. The university (Higher Education Provider) can assess this itself. ✅ [S23]

7. Costs

Tuition by fee status

WhoTypical annual tuitionStatus
Home students in EnglandCap £9,790 for 2026/27, planned £10,050 for 2027/28 at providers with a TEF award and an access plan (regulations subject to Parliament)✅ [S25] ⚠️ approval for 2027/28
Scottish students in ScotlandFree (paid via SAAS)🟡 [S16]
Rest-of-UK students in Scotland~£9,790 (2026/27, to be confirmed)⚠️ [S16]
International (includes most EU and all US students)About £17,000–£35,000 for most courses; £45,000–£55,000+ for medicine. Examples: Keele bands £17,100–£29,800; St Andrews £33,250 (2026 entry); Edinburgh MBChB £54,560; Exeter BMBS £48,900.🟡 [S7][S8][S16]
  • International fees can rise each year. Some universities guarantee a fixed fee for the whole course (Edinburgh); others cap increases (e.g. at most 5%), and some exclude medicine from the guarantee (UCL). Check before you accept an offer. 🟡 [S7][S16]

Who counts as "home" (fee status), for families from the EU

🟡 [S17]

  • Irish citizens: home fees under the Common Travel Area rules, subject to residence conditions.
  • EU citizens with settled or pre-settled status (the EU Settlement Scheme, for those living in the UK before 2021), meeting the residence conditions: usually home fees.
  • UK nationals who have lived in the EU, EEA or Switzerland: home fees for courses starting up to the 2027/28 academic year (transitional rule). ⚠️ Universities word the cut-off differently ("by 31 Dec 2027" vs "2027-28 entry"). Check GOV.UK and the university.
  • All other EU, EEA and Swiss citizens starting from 2021/22 onwards: international fees, no access to UK student loans.
  • Fee status is decided by the university, often with a questionnaire. UKCISA explains the rules in detail.

Other costs

  • UCAS fee £34.50 ✅ [S1]; admissions tests (UCAT, LNAT…) about £70–£130 each ⚠️
  • Student visa £558 ✅ [S4] + Immigration Health Surcharge £776 per year of the visa ✅ [S21]
  • Living costs: the visa rules' figures are a useful floor (next section). Real budgets in London are often higher.

8. Funding and financial aid

  • Home students (England): government tuition-fee and maintenance loans through Student Finance England, repaid after graduation according to income.
  • International students: no UK government loans. Some universities offer merit scholarships, usually partial (a few thousand pounds a year). Need-based aid on the US scale is rare.
  • US citizens can use US federal Direct Loans at many UK universities ("Title IV" schools), and some 529 plans can be used. ⚠️ Check each university.
  • Check what your home country offers: some systems fund study abroad (e.g. Norway, Luxembourg, some German Auslands-BAföG). These will be covered in each country file.

9. Visas and immigration

  • Who needs a Student visa: everyone except British and Irish citizens and people with settled or pre-settled status. That includes EU citizens since 2021. ✅ [S4]
  • Prerequisites: an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor, which issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), and proof of English and of money. ✅ [S4] 🟡
  • When to apply: up to 6 months before the course starts, from outside the UK. ✅ [S4]
  • Cost: £558 visa fee ✅ [S4] + £776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge for students, paid up front for the whole visa length. A part-year over 6 months is charged as a full year; up to 6 months costs nothing when applying from outside the UK. ✅ [S21]
  • Money to show (held for 28 consecutive days before applying), for up to 9 months:
    • Current GOV.UK amounts: £1,529 a month in London (£13,761), £1,171 elsewhere

(£10,539), held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of the application. ✅ [S22]

    • Applications from 30 Nov 2026: £1,570 a month in London (£14,130), £1,203 elsewhere

(£10,827), reported by a law firm but not yet shown on GOV.UK (checked 19 Oct 2026). ⚠️ [S18] If confirmed, it applies to most 2027 starters, who apply in 2027. Also needed: any course fees not yet paid.

  • Work during studies: usually up to 20 hours a week in term time. ⚠️
  • After graduation, the Graduate Route: for applications from 1 January 2027, 18 months (instead of 2 years) for bachelor's and master's graduates; 3 years for PhDs. Fee £937 plus the health surcharge. Students starting in 2027 will be on the 18-month rule. ✅ [S24]

10. Traps and tips for cross-border families

  1. Start at least 15 months ahead: for Oxbridge and medicine, test registration closes in September of the year before entry, so the work starts in the spring of the second-to-last school year.
  2. Predicted grades: French, German and many other schools don't issue them by default. Ask the school (or the IB coordinator) in the spring before applying. They are central to UK offers.
  3. One personal statement for 5 choices: choose 5 courses in the same subject area. A statement can't argue for medicine and law at once.
  4. Fee status before anything else: an EU family that assumes "home fees" by mistake faces a £20k+ a year surprise. Check eligibility (UKCISA) before shortlisting.
  5. Scotland is 4 years: compare the full cost of the degree, not the yearly fee.
  6. Firm and insurance choice: pick an insurance offer with a clearly lower condition than the firm one. Accepting is binding: if the conditions are met, the place is confirmed.
  7. Results timing: IB and bac results arrive in early July and the Abitur earlier, while UK confirmation runs to mid-August. Send results to the universities yourself.
  8. Visa money: the 28-day bank-balance rule catches families who move money at the last minute. Plan the transfer at least 6 weeks before the visa application.

11. Open questions / to verify

  • 2027/28 England fee cap (£10,050) is subject to Parliamentary approval. ⚠️ [S5]
  • Visa maintenance amounts from 30 Nov 2026: confirm on GOV.UK. ⚠️ [S18]
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: confirm £776 with the GOV.UK calculator. 🟡 [S6]
  • Exact 2027 dates: when the main scheme starts sending applications (1 or 2 Sep), A-level results day, UCAS Extra, the earlier 6 May reply deadline (one source). ⚠️
  • The Student visa English level (B2) and work-hour limits: confirm on GOV.UK. ⚠️
  • LNAT deadlines per university for 2027 entry. ⚠️
  • Wales and Northern Ireland home-fee caps (not yet researched).
  • Typical IB point ranges by university tier (find two or three more equivalence tables).

12. For parents: is the UK right for my child?

  • Strong in: almost every field. World-famous brands (Oxford 1st in THE 2027 and QS Europe 2026; Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh, King's); short 3-year degrees; London for finance and law. 🟡
  • Top universities (Complete University Guide 2027): Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, St Andrews, Imperial, Durham, Warwick, Loughborough, Bath, Lancaster. 🟡
  • Budget (international fee status, most EU and all non-EU students): about £29,000–£50,000 a year outside London, £36,000–£65,000 in London; ≈ €105,000–€230,000 for a 3-year degree. Medicine £300,000+. See How much will it cost?.
  • Best for: English-speaking students with strong exam results who know their subject, from families who can pay international fees (or Irish citizens and EU citizens with settled status, who pay home fees).
  • Think twice if: the budget is tight (the EU alternatives NL and IE are far cheaper), the child is undecided (the subject is fixed at 17), or the school can't provide predicted grades.
