🇨🇦 Canada — university admissions for families from abroad

Entry year 2027 · Last reviewed · ✅ official 🟡 secondary ⚠️ to verify

"2027 entry" means courses starting in September 2027 (fall 2027).

1. At a glance

  • Apply to each university (Ontario through the OUAC platform). Main deadlines for international applicants cluster around 15 January 2027 (McGill, Toronto, UBC). ⚠️ [S2]
  • Grade-based, more predictable than the US: admission rests mainly on school results in the required subjects; some programmes add a personal profile, essays or interviews. No SAT is generally required. 🟡
  • Top universities: McGill 27th, Toronto 29th, UBC 40th in the QS World University Rankings 2026. 🟡 [S5]
  • International fees: roughly C$40,000–65,000 a year (e.g. Toronto Arts & Science ≈ C$62,800, UBC Science ≈ C$54,700). French citizens in Québec pay the much lower Canadian non-resident rate (≈ C$12,000) for a bachelor's degree. 🟡 [S3][S4] ⚠️
  • Study permit with a provincial attestation letter (PAL, or CAQ in Québec) under a national cap, plus proof of funds of about C$22,895 a year on top of tuition. 🟡 [S1]
  • Work after graduating: a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) of up to 3 years for bachelor's graduates. 🟡 [S6]

2. The system

  • About 100 universities, run by the provinces: e.g. Ontario (Toronto, Waterloo, McMaster, Queen's, Western), Québec (McGill and Concordia in English; Université de Montréal and Laval in French), British Columbia (UBC, Simon Fraser), Alberta.
  • Bachelor's degree: 4 years (3 years in Québec after CEGEP for local students; international students with a full secondary diploma usually do a 4-year programme). 🟡
  • Admission to a faculty or programme (e.g. Engineering, Commerce, Arts & Science), with some flexibility to choose a major later in Arts and Science.
  • English or French: Québec has French-language universities; most others teach in English.
  • Colleges (2–3-year diplomas) are separate from universities and have different permit rules.

3. How to apply

  • Ontario: OUAC "105" application for applicants outside Ontario high schools (one form, then documents to each university). 🟡 [S2]
  • Elsewhere: each university's portal (McGill, UBC, etc.). Applications for fall 2027 opened in October 2026 at McGill. 🟡 [S2]
  • Documents: transcripts of the last years of school, predicted or final results, sometimes a personal profile, essays or a video interview (e.g. UBC personal profile, Toronto Rotman and engineering supplementary forms). ⚠️
  • No national entrance exam; SAT/ACT are generally optional or not required.
  • Application fees: about C$100–180 per university or per OUAC choice. ⚠️

5. Entry requirements for foreign qualifications

  • IB Diploma, A levels, French baccalauréat, Abitur and US high-school diplomas are widely accepted; universities publish minimum grades per programme and required subjects (e.g. maths, physics, chemistry for engineering). ⚠️ Named examples to add.
  • US applicants: a high-school diploma with strong grades in prerequisite courses; APs can count for credit; SAT/ACT are optional at most universities. ⚠️
  • Admission is mainly grade-based, so a clear grade target per programme is realistic.
  • Admission benchmarks (used by the chances tool): McGill typical minimum IB scores (out of 42, without TOK/EE): Arts 33, Science physical/computer 35, Science biological 36, Engineering computer/electrical/software 35, Mechanical 38, Management 35, Architecture and Bioengineering 39 (year not stated; at least 5 in each subject). ✅ [S7] UBC Vancouver 2025 entering averages: Engineering minimum 95% / mean 97%, Science 85% / 96%, Commerce 85% / 95%. ✅ [S8] Toronto publishes no averages; Engineering made offers to 27.5% of fall 2025 applicants (international 41.9%). 🟡 [S9]

6. Language requirements

  • English-taught: IELTS Academic around 6.5 (no band below 6) or equivalent, unless schooled in English. ⚠️
  • French-taught (Québec): proof of French; McGill and Concordia also set French-learning targets for students from outside Québec under a 2026 agreement. 🟡 [S3]

7. Costs

ItemAmountStatus
International tuitionabout C$40,000–65,000 a year (Toronto A&S ≈ C$62,800; UBC Science ≈ C$54,700; McGill varies by faculty, with a guaranteed fixed rate for the whole degree)🟡 [S4] ⚠️
French citizens in Québec (bachelor's)Canadian non-resident rate, about C$12,000 a year (master's: Québec resident rate)🟡 [S3]
Living costsabout C$20,000–25,000 a year (Toronto and Vancouver at the top)⚠️
Proof of funds for the permitC$22,895 a year (single applicant outside Québec) + tuition + travel🟡 [S1]
Study permit≈ C$150 + biometrics ≈ C$85⚠️

8. Funding and financial aid

  • Entrance scholarships for international students at many universities (e.g. UBC International Scholars, Toronto's Lester B. Pearson scholarship, very competitive). ⚠️
  • French families: the France–Québec agreement is the biggest saving (see §7).
  • No federal loans for international students.

9. Visas and immigration

  • Study permit (from IRCC): letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, plus a provincial attestation letter (PAL), or the CAQ in Québec, under the national cap (180,000 attestation-requiring permits expected in 2026, allocated by province). 🟡 [S1]
  • Proof of funds: C$22,895 + first-year tuition + travel. 🟡 [S1]
  • Work during studies: permitted off campus within weekly limits (around 24 hours a week in term time). ⚠️
  • After graduation: PGWP of 8 months to 3 years depending on the programme length; bachelor's graduates are exempt from the field-of-study rule; a language test (CLB 7) applies. 🟡 [S6]

10. Traps and tips for cross-border families

  1. French nationals: aim at Québec for the lower fee, and note that Montréal's English universities (McGill, Concordia) also qualify.
  2. Get the PAL or CAQ early: permits are capped by province; start immediately after accepting.
  3. Check programme prerequisites: specific subjects (e.g. calculus for engineering or commerce) decide eligibility.
  4. Winters and distances: universities are spread across a huge country; Toronto and Vancouver rents are high.
  5. Apply by mid-January even though some universities accept later applications: scholarships and competitive programmes fill early.

11. Open questions / to verify

  • Official 2027 deadlines at Toronto, UBC, McGill and OUAC 105. ⚠️ [S2]
  • Official 2026/27 international fee schedules (Toronto, UBC, McGill by faculty). ⚠️ [S4]
  • Study permit fee, work-hour limit, 2027 cap. ⚠️
  • Named grade requirements for IB, French bac, A levels at 3–4 universities. ⚠️
  • English test minimums per university. ⚠️

12. For parents: is Canada right for my child?

  • Strong in: engineering and computer science (Toronto, Waterloo, UBC, McGill), business (Toronto Rotman, UBC Sauder, McGill Desautels, Ivey), sciences, health. McGill 27th, Toronto 29th and UBC 40th in QS 2026. 🟡
  • Why families choose it: North American education at lower cost than the US, mostly grade-based admission, English or French, safe cities, and work rights after graduating.
  • Budget: about C$60,000–90,000 a year for international students (≈ €40,000–60,000); much less for French students in Québec (≈ C$32,000–37,000 a year). See How much will it cost?.
  • Best for: students who like the North American model without US prices; French families (Québec); students planning to work in Canada.
  • Think twice if: the budget is tight (outside Québec for French nationals), or the family can't start the permit process early (caps).
