"Fall 2027 entry" means the student starts in August/September 2027 and applies between August 2026 and January 2027.
1. At a glance
- Holistic admission: colleges weigh grades, course rigour, test scores (where required), essays, teacher and counsellor recommendations, and activities. No national exam, and no major is chosen up front at most colleges. ๐ก
- One platform for most colleges: the Common App (opened 1 August 2026, up to 20 colleges). Some use their own application or the Coalition (e.g. University of California). ๐ก [S1]
- Deadlines come early: Early Decision / Early Action around 1 November 2026, Regular Decision around 1โ15 January 2027, and the answer to colleges is due around 1 May 2027. ๐ก [S3]
- Tests are back at the most selective colleges: Harvard, MIT, Yale and Stanford require the SAT or ACT for fall 2027; Princeton is test-optional for fall 2027 (required from fall 2028). About 90% of four-year colleges do not require them. ๐ก [S2]
- Expensive sticker price, but real aid at some colleges: the full cost of attendance at a top private college is now $90,000โ$100,000 a year (Harvard $91,634 for 2026/27). A small group of colleges are need-blind for international students and meet full need, which can make them cheaper than the UK. ๐ก [S4][S5][S6]
- Visa climate is volatile: F-1 student visa fees of $535 (or $785 with the new "visa integrity fee"), social-media vetting, a travel ban affecting about 40 nationalities, and rules in court. Check the status right before applying. โ ๏ธ [S7][S8][S9]
2. The system
- Institutions: private colleges and universities (from Ivy League research universities to small liberal arts colleges) and public state universities (e.g. University of California, Michigan, Texas), plus 2-year community colleges.
- Bachelor's degree = 4 years. Students take general-education courses across subjects and declare a major usually by the end of the second year. Engineering, nursing and some business schools admit directly into the programme.
- Public universities charge out-of-state students far more than in-state ones. International students pay the out-of-state rate or more.
- Selectivity varies enormously: from open admission to acceptance rates of 3โ5%. A balanced list (some "reach", "match" and "likely" colleges) is essential.
3. How to apply
- Platforms: Common App (most private and many public colleges); the University of California's own application; the Coalition application; some colleges' own portals. ๐ก [S1]
- Common App 2026โ27: opened 1 August 2026; the seven essay prompts are unchanged; the personal essay is 250โ650 words; up to 20 colleges. New: a 250-word "Challenges and Circumstances" section, an "Activities and Experiences" section with an optional leadership field, and a 300-word Additional Information box. ๐ก [S1]
- College-specific supplements: most selective colleges add their own short essays ("Why us?").
- School documents: transcript covering all secondary years (grade 9 onward, i.e. the equivalent of 3e/2nde in France, Klasse 9/10 in Germany), a school profile that explains the grading system, a counsellor recommendation and usually two teacher recommendations. Many European schools have no counsellor: a head of year or principal can write it. ๐ก [S10]
- Predicted results: colleges use IB predicted grades (or bac/Abitur predictions) at the application stage and check final results later. ๐ก [S10]
- Application fees: usually about $50โ$90 per college (fee waivers exist). โ ๏ธ
- Interviews: optional or offered (often with alumni, online for students abroad) at some selective colleges.
Application rounds
| Round | Typical deadline | Binding? |

| Early Action (EA) | 1 or 15 November | No |
| Restrictive / Single-Choice Early Action (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford) | 1 November | No, but limits other early applications |
| Early Decision II | early January | Yes |

5. Entry requirements for foreign qualifications
- No fixed equivalences. US colleges read each school system in context; there is no official IB-to-GPA or bac-to-GPA conversion. They judge rigour (hardest courses available) and performance relative to classmates. ๐ก [S10]
- IB Diploma: highly regarded; predicted grades are used for admission, final results checked later. ๐ก [S10]
- French bac, Abitur, other national diplomas: accepted. Send the transcript with a certified English translation and a school profile explaining the grading (e.g. "15/20 is top 10% here"). Most selective colleges evaluate in-house; some ask for a credential evaluation (WES or similar). ๐ก [S10]
- Standardised tests:
- Required at Harvard, MIT, Yale and Stanford for fall 2027. Harvard accepts AP, IB, A-level or
national leaving exam results in place of the SAT/ACT where the tests are inaccessible. ๐ก [S2]
- Princeton is test-optional for fall 2027 and test-required from fall 2028. Columbia:
sources conflict. โ ๏ธ [S2]
- About 90% of four-year colleges do not require tests for fall 2027 (FairTest). ๐ก [S2]
- The SAT is digital and runs on the same dates in the US and abroad. 2026โ27 dates: 22 Aug,
12 Sep, 3 Oct, 7 Nov, 5 Dec 2026; 6 Mar, 1 May, 5 Jun 2027. โ [S12]
- Credit for IB, A levels, APs: many colleges award course credit or advanced standing for high IB/A-level/AP results. This can save a semester. โ ๏ธ Policies vary by college.
6. Language requirements
- Tests: TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, Duolingo English Test (DET) and PTE Academic are widely accepted. Minimums vary: e.g. West Virginia University asks for TOEFL 79, IELTS 6.5, DET 105; the most selective colleges expect much higher scores (or no test, but excellent English in the essays). ๐ก [S10]
- Waivers: often for native speakers and students in English-medium schools for several years. โ ๏ธ Check each college.
7. Costs
Average published tuition and fees, 2025โ26 (College Board)
| Sector | Tuition and fees | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Public four-year, out-of-state (โ international) | $31,880 | โ [S5] |
| Public four-year, in-state | $11,950 | โ [S5] |
| Private nonprofit four-year | $45,000 | โ [S5] |
- Add room, board, books, insurance and personal costs: about $20,000+ a year. ๐ก [S5]
- Top private colleges, full cost of attendance 2026โ27: Harvard $91,634; Yale about $98,000 (tuition $72,500 + housing $12,080 + food $9,520 + other). ๐ก [S4]
- Over 4 years, the sticker price at a top private college exceeds $350,000, which is why aid matters (next section).
- Other costs: application fees, SAT/ACT ($68+ for the SAT โ ๏ธ), English tests, CSS Profile ($25 for the first college + $16 each after that โ ๏ธ), visa ($535โ$785), mandatory student health insurance (often $2,000โ$4,000 a year โ ๏ธ), and flights.
8. Funding and financial aid
- Federal aid (Pell grants, federal loans) is for US citizens and permanent residents only. US citizens living abroad (including dual nationals) qualify: file the FAFSA. ๐ก
- International students depend on the college's own money:
- Need-blind for international applicants + meeting 100% of demonstrated need: Harvard,
Yale, Princeton, MIT, Amherst, Dartmouth and Bowdoin, and (from the class of 2029) Brown and Notre Dame, per secondary sources that cite the colleges' aid pages. For a middle-income family in Europe, the net cost at these colleges can be lower than UK international fees. ๐ก [S6] โ ๏ธ Verify each college's current policy.
- Need-aware: most other private colleges give aid to international students, but
asking for aid can reduce the chance of admission.
- Merit scholarships: common at many private and some public universities, rarely at the
most selective ones.
- Forms: the CSS Profile (opens 1 Oct; deadlines per college, e.g. 1 Nov for early applicants, 15 Jan for RD) and sometimes the college's own international aid form, plus parents' tax returns and income documents. ๐ก [S11]
- The I-20 needs proof of funding: the family must document the cost of the first year (after aid) before the college issues the I-20.
9. Visas and immigration
- Visa: F-1 for degree students. Sequence: admission โ deposit โ college issues the Form I-20 (needs proof of funding) โ pay the SEVIS I-901 fee ($350) โ online DS-160 form โ visa application fee ($185) โ interview at a US consulate. ๐ก [S7]
- Visa integrity fee ($250): created by a 2025 law and payable when the visa is issued, but collection varies by consulate as of autumn 2026. Budget $535 to $785 in total. โ ๏ธ [S7]
- Social-media vetting: F, J and M applicants must make their social-media profiles public for review (since 2025). ๐ก [S8]
- Travel ban: under Presidential Proclamation 10998 (in force since 1 January 2026), visa issuance is fully suspended for nationals of 19 countries (including Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen) and partially suspended, including F and J student visas, for 19 more (including Cuba, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Venezuela). Visas issued before the restrictions are reportedly not revoked. Dual nationals should check both passports. ๐ก [S13]
- Duration of status: a DHS rule replacing open-ended F-1 status with fixed admission periods (up to 4 years), plus extension applications, was due on 15 Sep 2026. It was blocked by a federal court on 14 Sep 2026; litigation continues. โ ๏ธ [S9]
- Work during studies: on-campus jobs up to 20 hours a week in term time; off-campus only through CPT/OPT. ๐ก
- After graduation, OPT: 12 months of work authorisation, plus 24 months for STEM degrees (STEM OPT). Still available, but on 7 October 2026 DHS proposed fees on the OPT programme (reported as $70,000 per initial recommendation, paid by institutions). Proposal only. โ [S14]
- Longer-term work visa (H-1B): a $100,000 employer fee introduced in 2025 is caught in litigation (struck down, temporarily reinstated, extended by proclamation). Families should not count on staying to work in the US after graduation. โ ๏ธ [S8]
10. Traps and tips for cross-border families
- Start in the second-to-last school year. US applications reward four years of activities, and early deadlines fall at the start of the final school year (1 November).
- Early Decision is binding. Only apply ED if it's the clear first choice and the family has run the college's net price calculator.
- Need-blind for international is rare. Outside the handful of colleges listed in ยง8, asking for aid can hurt the chances of admission. Know which kind each college on the list is.
- European schools don't do US paperwork: no counsellor, no school profile, no predicted grades by default, recommendations in the local language. Ask the school early and explain what's needed (translations, a profile, a counsellor letter).
- Book tests early: SAT seats abroad fill up. Test centres can be in another city or country.
- US citizens abroad (including children of US-born parents living in Europe) are domestic applicants: they qualify for federal aid, need no visa, and may pay in-state rates in some states. โ ๏ธ Rules vary by state.
- Visa: plan for the worst case. Interview waits, administrative processing, the travel ban and court-dependent rules can delay or block a start. Keep a non-US option (UK, NL, home country) open until the visa is in the passport.
- Don't compare sticker prices: at a need-blind, full-need college, an aid package can make the US cheaper than international fees in the UK. At a need-aware college, the opposite.
11. Open questions / to verify
- Common App fee and typical per-college application fees for 2026โ27. โ ๏ธ
- Columbia's testing policy for fall 2027 (sources conflict). โ ๏ธ [S2]
- Need-blind for international: confirm each college on its official aid page. โ ๏ธ [S6]
- Visa integrity fee: confirm collection status with the State Department. โ ๏ธ [S7]
- Travel ban: confirm the full 39-country list on travel.state.gov (secondary sources list 38). โ ๏ธ [S13]
- Status of the duration-of-status litigation, the OPT fee proposal and the H-1B fee. โ ๏ธ [S8][S9]
- University of California deadline and application dates for fall 2027. โ ๏ธ
- ACT international test dates (separate from the national schedule). โ ๏ธ
- SAT fee and CSS Profile fees: confirm with the College Board. โ ๏ธ
- Student health insurance cost ranges (add 3โ4 named examples). โ ๏ธ
12. For parents: is the US right for my child?
- Strong in: everything at the top level (MIT 2nd in THE 2027; Princeton, Stanford, Harvard, Caltech, Berkeley, Yale in the top 10), with flexible degrees (the major is chosen in year 2), campus life, and liberal arts colleges. ๐ก
- Why families choose it: brand, flexibility, research, and, at a few colleges, generous need-based aid for international students (need-blind and full-need: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Amherst, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Brown, Notre Dame). ๐ก โ ๏ธ
- Budget: sticker price $90,000โ$98,000 a year at top private colleges (โ $370,000โ$400,000 for 4 years); public out-of-state โ $52,000 a year. Net price with aid can be much lower. Run each college's net price calculator. See How much will it cost?.
- Best for: all-round students (grades + activities + essays) who are undecided about a major, US citizens living abroad (federal aid), and families eligible for need-based aid at need-blind colleges.
- Think twice if: the child wants medicine (graduate entry, nearly closed to internationals), the budget depends on aid from need-aware colleges, or the family can't absorb visa uncertainty (rules in litigation in 2026).
