🇪🇸 Spain — university admissions for families from abroad

Entry year 2027 · Last reviewed · ✅ official 🟡 secondary ⚠️ to verify

"2027 entry" means courses starting in September 2027 (curso 2027-2028).

1. At a glance

  • Two very different sectors:
    • Public universities: cheap for EU students (about €700–€2,500 a year), mostly

taught in Spanish (or Catalan, Basque, Galician), and admission ranked by a grade out of 14.

    • Private universities (IE, ESADE, Navarra, Comillas…): €15,000–€30,000+ a year, many

English-taught degrees, and their own selection (tests, interviews). 🟡 [S2][S5]

  • For foreign students, the key is UNEDasiss: it turns a foreign diploma into a Spanish admission grade (the credencial). The optional PCE exams (Pruebas de Competencias Específicas) raise that grade up to the maximum of 14. 🟡 [S1]
  • Apply region by region: public universities take pre-enrolment (preinscripción) per autonomous community, mostly in June – early July 2027. Places go to the highest grades first. Medicine cut-offs are around 12.7–13.1 out of 14. 🟡 [S3]
  • Non-EU students: a student visa with proof of 100% of the IPREM (about €600 a month in 2026), and the right to work up to 30 hours a week. 🟡 [S4]
  • Low living costs compared with northern Europe (Madrid and Barcelona excepted).

2. The system

  • About 50 public and 40 private universities. The public universities are run by the autonomous communities, which set fees and admission calendars.
  • **Bachelor's degree (grado): 4 years (240 ECTS) in most fields; medicine takes 6 years**; architecture and some engineering degrees 5. Master's: 1–2 years.
  • Subject chosen up front. There is no general first year.
  • Public admission is grade-based: the "nota de admisión" (out of 14) = school grade (60%) + general exam (40%), up to 10, plus up to 4 points from two subject exams weighted for the chosen degree. Cut-offs (notas de corte) depend on demand each year.
  • Strong fields: medicine and health sciences (excellent hospitals, high demand), business (ESADE, IE, Pompeu Fabra), engineering (UPC Barcelona, UPM Madrid), tourism, architecture.

3. How to apply

Public universities

  1. Accreditation with UNEDasiss (the UNED university's service for international students). 🟡 [S1]
    • EU / EU-system diplomas, IB, European Baccalaureate (and diplomas from countries with

agreements): request the credencial de acceso, which gives a grade out of 10 and the right to apply.

    • Non-EU systems (e.g. US high-school diploma): homologation of the diploma to the

Spanish bachillerato (through the Ministry of Education; can take months), then accreditation. If homologation isn't finished, choose "Accreditation + PCE". 🟡 [S1]

  2. PCE exams (optional but often decisive): subject exams (maths, biology, chemistry, economics…) taken to reach the higher grades needed for competitive degrees. 2026 dates (2027 expected to follow the same pattern): applications 16 March – 28 April; exams 25–29 May in Spain and 8–13 June at UNED centres in Europe and the Americas; a September session too (applications in July, exams early September). In person only; places at exam centres are limited. 🟡 [S1]
  3. **Pre-enrolment (preinscripción)** in each autonomous community's portal (e.g. Madrid's "distrito único"), usually June – early July, ranking several degrees. Results come in rounds from mid-July (Madrid: first list on 10 July in 2026). 🟡 [S3]
  4. **Enrolment (matrícula):** July, after admission.

Private universities

  • Own applications, often on a rolling basis from autumn: admission test, interview, transcripts and an English test for English-taught degrees. Some (e.g. IE) admit in several rounds from October onward. ⚠️
  • They still need the UNEDasiss credencial or homologation for official degrees, but usually not the PCE. ⚠️

5. Entry requirements for foreign qualifications

QualificationRouteStatus
EU school-leaving diplomas (French bac, Abitur, Italian maturità…), IB, European BaccalaureateUNEDasiss credencial (grade out of 10), plus PCE subject exams to reach up to 14🟡 [S1]
UK A levelsTreated through UNEDasiss (systems with agreements)⚠️
US high-school diploma and other non-EU systemsHomologation to the Spanish bachillerato first, then accreditation and PCE🟡 [S1]
  • How the grade out of 14 is built: up to 10 from the school results (converted by UNEDasiss), up to 4 more from two PCE subject exams weighted (×0.1 or ×0.2) for the chosen degree. ⚠️ The weights are set by each university and degree. Without PCE, a foreign applicant usually tops out at 10, which is not enough for competitive degrees.
  • Medicine example (2026 cut-offs): Complutense Madrid 13.100, Santiago de Compostela 12.844, Barcelona (Clínic) 12.68. That means near-perfect school grades plus top PCE results in biology and chemistry. 🟡 [S3]

6. Language requirements

  • Spanish-taught degrees (most public ones): often no formal certificate is required, but B2 is the realistic minimum, and some universities ask for DELE B2. In Catalonia, many classes are in Catalan; check each course's language. ⚠️
  • English-taught degrees: mainly at private universities (IE, ESADE, Navarra, Comillas, Nebrija…) and a few public bilingual or English groups (e.g. Carlos III Madrid, Pompeu Fabra). Typical requirement: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+. 🟡 [S5] ⚠️

7. Costs

Tuition

SectorTypical annual cost (60 ECTS)Status
Public, EU studentsDepends on the region and the field: e.g. Catalonia €17.69 per credit in 2026-27 (≈ €1,060 a year); Andalusia about €12.62 per credit (≈ €760); Madrid is higher (≈ €1,300–€2,000)🟡 [S2] ⚠️ Madrid
Public, non-EU non-resident studentsSame as EU in some regions; higher in others. Madrid charges non-EU non-residents over 18 the "fourth enrolment" price (several times the standard rate).🟡 [S2] ⚠️
Private universitiesIE University €26,500 for most bachelor's degrees (BBA €29,000; Global BBA €43,800), +2.9% a year fixed, plus a €1,200 one-off fee. ESADE double degrees ~€23,600. Others €10,000–€20,000.✅ [S5] (IE) 🟡 (ESADE)
  • Repeating a subject costs more (second, third and fourth enrolment prices).
  • Grant holders (becarios) are exempt from public fees.

Living costs

  • Madrid and Barcelona: about €1,000–€1,400 a month (room €450–€800). Other cities (Valencia, Seville, Granada, Salamanca): about €700–€1,000 a month. ⚠️
  • **Student residences (colegios mayores):** €800–€1,500 a month with meals. ⚠️
  • Non-EU visa minimum: 100% of the IPREM, about €600 a month (~€7,200 a year). This is a floor, not a realistic budget. 🟡 [S4]

8. Funding and financial aid

  • **Ministry of Education grants (becas MEC):** means-tested, for Spanish and EU students who meet residence conditions. Tuition waivers plus a fixed amount. ⚠️
  • Regional grants (e.g. Catalonia's beques Equitat fee reductions). ⚠️
  • Private universities' scholarships: merit and need-based, often 10–50% of tuition (IE, ESADE, Navarra). ⚠️
  • Home-country funding can often be used in Spain. This will be covered in each country file.

9. Visas and immigration

  • EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: no visa. Register (registro de ciudadano de la UE, NIE number) if staying more than 3 months.
  • Non-EU (including UK since Brexit, and US): a student visa from the Spanish consulate, then the TIE card in Spain for stays over 6 months. Requirements: admission letter, proof of funds (100% IPREM, ~€600 a month in 2026), health insurance without co-payments, and a criminal-record certificate and medical certificate for longer stays. 🟡 [S4]
  • Work during studies: up to 30 hours a week, automatically and with no extra permit, for higher-education students (Real Decreto 1155/2024); exceeding it can end the authorisation. ✅ [S6]
  • After graduation: graduates of higher education (at least EQF Level 6) can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business, from 2 months before to 3 months after the study permit ends; the ministry gives the job-search visa as 1 year. ✅ [S6] (Some guides cite 24 months ⚠️.)

10. Traps and tips for cross-border families

  1. Plan the PCE exams: without them a foreign applicant's grade usually caps at 10/14, which is too low for medicine, dentistry, double degrees or top universities. Choose PCE subjects that are weighted for the target degree.
  2. US and other non-EU diplomas need homologation, which can take months. Start in the autumn of the final school year.
  3. Each region has its own pre-enrolment portal and calendar (Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Valencia…). Applying to universities in several regions means several applications.
  4. Language of teaching: Catalan in Catalonia, Basque in the Basque Country and Galician in Galicia can be used in classes. Check each course.
  5. Non-EU fees in Madrid: non-resident non-EU students can pay several times the EU price. Check each region before shortlisting.
  6. Private ≠ better everywhere: in medicine, law and the sciences, the top public universities are often more prestigious. Private universities stand out in business (ESADE, IE) and English-taught programmes.
  7. Medicine is very competitive but leads to an EU-recognised degree. Spain also has a large private medical school sector (fees €15,000–€25,000 a year ⚠️).

11. Open questions / to verify

  • UNEDasiss 2027 dates for PCE and the credencial, and the exact grade formula. ⚠️ [S1]
  • 2027 pre-enrolment dates in Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia and Valencia. ⚠️ [S3]
  • Madrid public prices per credit for 2026-27 and non-EU rates by region. ⚠️ [S2]
  • ESADE, Navarra and Comillas bachelor's fees for 2027-28 (official pages). ⚠️ [S5]
  • IPREM for 2027; confirm the job-search permit duration in the regulation text. ⚠️ [S4][S6]
  • UK A-level and US diploma routes (agreements, homologation). ⚠️
  • Language requirements per university (Spanish B2 policies). ⚠️

12. For parents: is Spain right for my child?

  • Strong in: medicine (Barcelona, Complutense, Autónoma de Madrid, Navarra), business (ESADE, IE, Pompeu Fabra, Carlos III), engineering (UPC, UPM), architecture, tourism. 🟡
  • Why families choose it: low public fees and living costs for EU students, quality of life, and English-taught private options (IE, ESADE) for international business careers.
  • Budget: public, EU €9,000–€19,000 a year (≈ €36,000–€76,000 for 4 years); private €25,000–€47,000 a year (≈ €100,000–€190,000). See How much will it cost?.
  • Best for: Spanish-speaking students (public universities); students targeting international business via ESADE or IE; EU families on a moderate budget.
  • Think twice if: the child targets a competitive public degree (medicine) without strong PCE results, comes from a non-EU system (homologation takes months), or is non-EU and looking at Madrid (higher non-resident fees).
