Oxford and Cambridge for international applicants

Last reviewed · official secondary to verify

In short

  • One or the other, by 15 October 2026: the UCAS deadline comes with admissions tests (12–16 October), Cambridge's extra form (22 October) and Oxford written work (10 November).
  • For 2027 entry Oxford uses the UAT-UK tests (ESAT, TMUA, TARA) like Cambridge: the test and the December interview decide more than grades.
  • International fees: £39,620–£66,580 a year at Oxford, £30,798–£70,554 plus a £12,500–£15,950 College fee at Cambridge; EU students usually pay them.

Oxford and Cambridge ("Oxbridge") are the two most demanded universities for families abroad, and the ones with the most unusual process: an earlier deadline, admissions tests, written work, interviews in December and decisions in January, all before the rest of the world has started. Most of it is the same for UK and international students, but three things weigh more for international applicants: the tests (the most comparable evidence across school systems), predicted grades that many foreign schools do not issue by default, and the cost (international fees, and at Cambridge a College fee on top).

Two rules frame everything:

  • One or the other. A student can apply to Oxford or Cambridge, not both, in the same year (with rare exceptions such as organ awards). 6
  • The deadline is 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time, for 2027 entry, through UCAS: three months before the usual UK deadline. 1 2

1. The chances, honestly

OxfordCambridge
Applications, offers (2025 entry)23,329 applications, 3,891 offers: 16.7% 4about 22% overall 6
By nationalityUK about 21%, EU about 7%, other international about 10% 6international about 15% 6
Students admitted from outside the UK21% of admissions (EU and non-EU together) 4
  • EU applicants face the lowest rates. Part of the gap is that EU applicants apply disproportionately to the most competitive courses (economics, PPE, computer science, law), but expect stiff competition. 6
  • The course matters more than the university. Computer science at Oxford made 163 offers for 1,213 applications in the last cycle (about 1 in 7), with EU applicants at about 1 in 13. Check each course's admissions statistics before choosing. 4
  • Grades alone do not decide. Almost every applicant has top grades. The test score and the interview make the difference, and they are where international applicants can compete on equal terms.

2. Grades: what the offer looks like in your child's diploma

IB Diploma38–40 points including core, with 6s and 7s at HL (e.g. Law 38 with 666; Economics and Management 39 with 766; Engineering 40 with 776, 7s in maths and physics) 541–42 points with 776 at HL; maths HL "Analysis and Approaches" for most courses needing maths 3
French bac général16 / 16.5 / 15 overall for A*AA / A*A*A / AAA courses, with the required spécialités at 15–16 517/20 (mention très bien), usually 17 in the relevant subjects 3

US diplomaAPs at 5 plus SAT/ACT (see the course page) 5 AP tests at score 5 plus a high SAT or ACT 3

Offers are conditional: the student must reach the grades in the final exams (and the English level) by the summer. See also the diploma guide for how UK universities read each diploma.

3. The admissions tests (2027 entry)

From 2027 entry, Oxford uses the UAT-UK tests run by Cambridge and Imperial, instead of its own MAT, PAT and TSA. One sitting serves both universities and others such as Imperial. 1

  • Dates for 2027 entry: UAT-UK registration opened 1 June 2026, booking 20 July, booking closed 28 September 2026, tests 12–16 October 2026 in Pearson test centres worldwide, results to candidates 16 November. 1 2
  • Courses without a pre-registered test may set a written assessment at interview (Cambridge's "college admission assessments") or ask for written work. 1 2
  • Practice: use the free official papers on the UAT-UK site. The tests reward maths fluency more than any one school system: students from systems with less maths should start a year ahead.

4. The application, step by step

  1. UCAS application by 15 October, 18:00 UK time: up to 5 choices, only one of them Oxford or Cambridge. 2 6
  2. Personal statement: since 2026 entry, three questions (why this course; how your studies prepared you; what you have done outside school), 4,000 characters in total. At Oxbridge it should be almost entirely about the subject. 7
  3. Reference and predicted grades from the school: ask in June of the year before. Many schools outside the UK do not issue predicted grades unless asked.
  4. Cambridge only: My Cambridge Application, an extra form, by 22 October 2026; and a transcript by the same date for most international applicants (it can take weeks to obtain). 2
  5. Oxford only: written work for some courses, by 10 November 2026 (in English, marked by a teacher). 8
  6. College: choose one, or make an open application (the university allocates one). Both universities move strong applicants between colleges ("pooling" at Cambridge, "reallocation" at Oxford), so the choice changes little.

5. Interviews and decisions

  • Oxford: shortlisted applicants are invited to online interviews in December 2026; decisions on 12 January 2027 through UCAS. 1
  • Cambridge: invitations mostly in November; most interviews in the first 3 weeks of December; decisions for December interviewees on 27 January 2027 (the Winter Pool can lead to an offer from another college). 2 Interviews are online or in person depending on the college and course; many colleges interview applicants based outside the UK online. 11
  • What an interview is: an academic conversation, like a short tutorial: a problem or text the student has not seen, to show how they think. It is not about CV or personality. 1

6. Cost for international students (2027-28)

OxfordCambridge
Tuition, Home fee status£10,050 9£10,050 10
Tuition, Overseas fee status£39,620–£66,580 a year, by course (clinical medicine higher); a single fee, no separate college fee 9£30,798–£70,554 a year by course (e.g. Economics, Law £30,798; Mathematics £34,356; Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences £46,872; Medicine £70,554) 10
College fee (Overseas only)— (included) 9£12,500–£15,950 a year, by college 10
Living costsabout £1,475–£2,175 a month (2027-28) 9see the university's living costs page
  • EU, EEA and Swiss students usually pay the Overseas fee unless they have settled or pre-settled status in the UK, or another eligible status; Irish citizens pay the Home fee. 9 10
  • A full degree for an international student typically costs £150,000–£250,000 with living costs (3–4 years). Financial guarantees are needed for the visa and by the colleges. 10
  • Scholarships for international undergraduates are few. See the scholarships guide (Reach Oxford for students from low-income countries; Cambridge Trust awards are very limited at undergraduate level).

7. English

Both universities ask for IELTS Academic 7.5 (7.0 in each part) or Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 191–193, unless an exemption applies (schooling or the IB in English, majority English-speaking nationality). It is a condition of the offer, to be met by the summer (Oxford: 31 July). Oxford does not currently accept TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026 (the new TOEFL format). 5 See the language certificates guide.

9. Who should apply, and the back-up plan

  • Apply if the predicted grades reach the offer, the student enjoys the subject beyond the syllabus, and can prepare seriously for the test. A strong student with a lower chance still loses nothing: the other four UCAS choices remain.
  • Build the rest of the UCAS list carefully: Imperial, LSE, UCL, St Andrews, Durham, Edinburgh, Warwick, with at least one safer choice. See what are my chances.
  • Apply in a second system too (e.g. the Netherlands, Ireland or the home country): Oxbridge decisions come in January, early enough to keep other applications alive.
