How to use rankings: global rankings measure research and reputation, not teaching quality or what a 17-year-old will experience. Use them to build a shortlist, then check the course (subject ranking, content, teaching language, cost, first-year pass rate). National rankings (Guardian / Complete University Guide in the UK, CHE in Germany, Keuzegids in the Netherlands, El Mundo in Spain, L'Etudiant in France) often say more about teaching. ⚠️
Admission difficulty ≠ quality in open-admission systems (Germany, French universities, many Dutch programmes): excellent universities there are not hard to get into, but hard to stay in. In Germany and Switzerland the differences between public universities are small: a degree from any of them is respected.

3. Shortlist method for parents
- Pick the field (Which field, which country?) and the languages the student can study in.
- Filter countries by budget (How much will it cost?) and eligibility (What are my chances?).
- For each remaining country, take 3–5 universities from the lists above and check: the subject ranking (QS by subject, THE by subject), the course content, the teaching language, the entry requirement for the student's diploma, and the cost.
- Balance selectivity: reaches, targets, likely options across 2–3 countries.
