French universities admit most bachelor's applicants who meet the entry requirements. The most sought-after routes are elsewhere: classes préparatoires (prépas), grandes écoles that recruit straight after the bac, Sciences Po and the IEPs, business-school bachelor's and a few selective university programmes (Dauphine, Paris law). None of them appear in world rankings, yet for many French families they matter more than any university. All are applied to on Parcoursup, mostly between mid-January and mid-March, with entrance exams or interviews in April–May for some. [S1]
1. How selective each route is (Parcoursup 2025)
"Access rate" is the share of applicants who received an offer; "TB" is the share of admitted students with the mention Très Bien (16/20 or more, including "félicitations", 18+). Applicants make several wishes, so the application counts are wishes, not people. [S1]

2. How each route works
Prépas (CPGE). Two years in a lycée (free in public lycées), then competitive exams ("concours") for engineering schools (MPSI, MP2I, PCSI, PTSI), business schools (ECG), the ENS and other schools (Lettres, B/L), or agronomy and veterinary schools (BCPST). Admission is on the Parcoursup file: Première and Terminale report cards and the teachers' "fiche avenir". MPSI and PCSI expect the spécialités maths and physique-chimie; MP2I maths with NSI or physique-chimie; BCPST SVT with physique-chimie or maths; ECG maths (maths approfondies, or maths complémentaires for the "maths appliquées" option). Applying to several prépas of different selectivity is the norm. [S1] [S5]
Post-bac engineering schools. Five-year programmes with an integrated preparatory cycle: INSA, the universités de technologie (UTC, UTT, UTBM), the Polytech network. Admission on the file (maths and physics grades weigh most), sometimes with an interview. Public fees (about €600 a year for EU students; €2,895 a year for non-EU first-cycle students at INSA Hauts-de-France in 2025-26). [S1] [S4]
Sciences Po (Paris). One bachelor on 7 campuses (Paris, Reims, Le Havre, Menton, Nancy, Dijon, Poitiers), some taught in English. Two stages on Parcoursup: the file (bac results and three years of high-school record), then a video interview for shortlisted candidates (2–31 May in 2026). Fees: income-based for EEA residents, fixed €14,900 a year outside the EEA (2026-27). [S1] [S3] [S6]
The IEPs. Seven IEPs (Aix, Lille, Lyon, Rennes, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Strasbourg, Toulouse) share one written entrance exam in late April (25 April in 2026): contemporary issues, history and a modern language. Bordeaux and Grenoble recruit on their own. About 1 in 10 applicants to the common exam gets a place. [S1] [S2]
Arts et Métiers. The famous engineering degree of Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) is entered after a prépa (PT, PSI, TSI…). Straight after the bac, Arts et Métiers offers a 3-year Bachelor en Sciences et Ingénierie, speciality mechanics and production (formerly "Bachelor de Technologie"), in Bordeaux-Talence and Châlons-en-Champagne. It is CTI-accredited and confers the grade de licence, so graduates can go on to a master's or an engineering programme. It is mostly for STI2D students and some general-bac students with maths or physique-chimie: file, then interview. The third year is work-study (contrat de professionnalisation). Public fees (€178 in 2025-26). [S1] [S9]
Private engineering schools. About 70 private schools recruit after the bac for a 5-year programme: EPITA, EFREI, ECE, ESILV, EPF, ISEP, ESME, IPSA, ESTACA, JUNIA (HEI, ISEN), ICAM, ECAM, CPE Lyon, UniLaSalle, Purpan, CESI and others. Most select on the file plus a common written test (concours Avenir: ECE, EPF, ESILV, ESTACA, EIGSI…; concours Advance: EPITA, ESME, IPSA, Sup'Biotech; Puissance Alpha for others) and interviews; most admit a large share of applicants (around 80% of applicants received an offer in 2025), with ESILV (43%) and the aerospace schools (56%) more selective. Tuition is usually about €8,000–11,000 a year (EPITA €5,590 for the January intake in 2026-27; check each school), with apprenticeship tracks that are free and paid in the later years. [S1] [S8]
Business-school bachelor's (BBA). Mostly four-year programmes with the exams Sésame (written tests 8 April 2026, orals late April–May) and Accès (9 April 2026, orals 24 April–13 May), or school-specific tests. The bac mention matters less than the tests and the interview: only 6% of students admitted to the leading BBAs had a TB. Tuition about €11,000–17,000 a year (ESSEC Global BBA €13,750). [S2] [S7]
Selective university programmes. Dauphine (economics, management, law, maths) and the Paris law faculties (Assas, Paris 1, with double licences) select on the file; double licences are the most selective. [S1]
3. For families abroad
- French bac holders abroad (AEFE schools) apply on Parcoursup like students in France.
- Other diplomas: EU applicants use Parcoursup; most non-EU applicants go through Études en France. Prépas and Sciences Po accept international diplomas; check each programme's page on Parcoursup.
- Language: French at B2–C1 for prépas and most programmes; Sciences Po and some BBAs also teach in English.
- Costs: prépas are free in public lycées (university registration and CVEC €105 only); living costs are higher in Paris (about €1,200–1,900 a month). [S4]
4. How uniacross uses this
The suggestions in each child's dashboard include these routes when France is among the countries considered: chance estimated from the access rate and the grades of admitted students, prerequisites (spécialités), language and cost, with the entrance-exam dates added to the timeline when one is chosen.
